Strengthen, Lengthen, and Tone at The Bar Method in Madison

By Taylor Smith

Located at 122 Main Street, 2nd floor, in Madison, NJ, The Bar Method is a great option for building muscles, confidence, and long lines in the New Year.

Created by physical therapists, The Bar Method technique ensures safe, low-impact movement for all ages and physical capabilities, including those dealing with injuries. Unlike some barre studios, The Bar Method instructors undergo a lengthy and specialized training that includes knowledge of anatomy and hands-on adjustments. Annual certification exams mean that high standards are guaranteed in every class.

The Bar Method says it is a workout that is sustainable for life as it builds muscle while remaining low impact. The 60-minute format is available for three different classes: Signature Bar Method, Bar Advanced, and Bar Move, which focuses on thigh and seat work). The 45-minute Bar Express offering is still a full-body workout, but within a compacted time frame.

Every class begins with a warm-up, push-ups, and a series of upper-body exercises. Students then take to the floor for seat and core work. Most moves involve each student using their own body weight as a form of resistance. This format — which is also present in many forms of yoga, Pilates, and dance — naturally engages the core in almost every move. The fast pace of the class promises to spike heat rate and burn calories. The Bar Method instructors claim that the result is a strong, dancer-like body with improved posture, flexibility, and body alignment. While challenging, each class ends with stretching, which encourages faster recovery and poise.

Going 17 years strong, The Bar Method currently maintains 121 active studios across the United States and Canada. New Jersey locations include Madison, Bernardsville, Closter, Montclair, Moorestown (opening soon), Mountain Lakes, Princeton, Shrewsbury, Summit, Ridgewood, Closter, Hoboken, Englewood, Warren, Westfield, Jersey City (opening soon), and West Caldwell.
