Nicholas Roerich: The Master of Mountains

By Taylor Smith
The Nicholas Roerich Museum is housed in a stately, yet subdued building in New York’s Upper West Wide. The Russian-born painter and spiritualist explored the mystic qualities and majesty of Russia, the Himalayas, and Central Asia.
The Museum itself is like walking through a home. A piano remains in one of the upstairs rooms alongside the artist’s own work and the wooden floorboards creak with each passing step.
Admission is free, though donations are welcome. Museum hours are Saturday-Sunday, 2 to 5 p.m. and Tuesday-Friday, noon to 5 p.m. (closed Monday).
Informational books, prints, and postcards are available on the first floor. Don’t be surprised to hear the Russian language being spoken more than English as the Museum serves as a sort of destination.
