“I don’t know if it’s eternal back-to-school excitement, which makes zero sense because I hated homework/tests, but there’s just something about anticipating fall’s arrival that always feels hopeful and fresh. With fashion week setting the stage for inspiration, it’s an ideal time to play with trends or add some variation to looks that are tried and true.

The nail shape is absolutely the basis of everything (coincidentally or not so coincidentally is also the name of Smith & Cult’s base coat). While I swoon over an editorial worthy, pointy, long, completely-impractical-for-anyone-who-types-all-day nail shape, it’s not exactly user friendly beyond the runway. A shorter version of the same nail is stylish and elegantly elongates the hand, but also is functional in the real world  - plus, no stitches required due to scratching a little itch.

Some beauty blogs are encouraging going bare this fall when it comes to manicures and pedicures. The au natural approach is appealing - and literally effortless - but I think incorporating a bit of color is unique and adds dimension. The negative space trend hits the nail, so to speak. Sexy without trying too hard, it allows a portion of the untouched, colorless nail to peak through. I saw one stellar nail artist in NYC intricately paint moon shapes on the base and tip of the nail in Smith & Cult’s Nailed Lacquer in Kings & Thieves, an opaque dark ink blue shade, leaving the center of the nail unpolished. Her trick for keeping the lines clean was to cover the bare part of the nail with tape – it worked and seemed like magic.

Deep, jewel toned hues are usually synonymous with fall, but I think it’s more fun to go with a shade that’s slightly less expected. Perhaps it’s my rebellious-ish nature manifesting itself through nail lacquer, but it’s the reason I wore Nailed Lacquer in Dirty Baby, (an ultra-fine silver glitter suspended in an obsidian base) all summer and why Smith & Cult’s new Nailed Lacquer shade called Regret the Moon will be in constant mani rotation come fall. The opaque sweet crème may not jive with the no-white-after Labor-Day mindset, but those sorts of strict style/beauty rules are antiquated and limiting. I’m daydreaming of a head-to-toe white, Bianca Jagger-ish ensemble paired with milky, moonlight inspired nails – mentally pinning that to my fall inspiration mood board right now.”
