93rd Juried Art Show at Phillips’ Mill

The Phillips’ Mill Community Association celebrates its 93rd Juried Art Show at Phillips’ Mill, the landmark 18th-century grist mill on River Road just north of New Hope, from September 24 through October 30. 

Considered the birthplace of Pennsylvania Impressionism, the organization was founded in 1929 by William Lathrop and artist friends of the New Hope School including Daniel Garber, Edward Redfield, Fern Coppedge, John Folinsbee, and Mary Elizabeth Price. Their organization was devoted to exhibiting the works of their day, just as today’s juried show is devoted to the artistic spirit of today.  more

Meet the “Hello Girls” With Army Historian Melissa Ziobro

On Thursday, August 3 at 6:30 p.m., join Monmouth University Professor and former U.S. Army Fort Monmouth Command Historian Melissa Ziobro for a talk on how the U.S. Army Signal Corps employed women as telephone switchboard operators during WWI. The “Hello Girls” worked long hours to ensure battlefield communications. Their chief operator, Grace Banker, hailed from New Jersey. After the war, the women fought for veteran status, and they are being considered for a Congressional Gold Medal today. more

On Thursday, July 28 at 6:30 p.m., spend an evening discovering six episodes of major AT&T innovations (many created in New Jersey), presented by AT&T’s Corporate Historian Dr. Sheldon Hochheiser.

These discoveries include:

The Telephone that started it all (Massachusetts).

The High Vacuum Tube Amplifier (New York), which made it possible to amplify an electrical signal, and thus made transcontinental telephone service possible. It also enabled radio and television transmission. more

Borough of Glass Art Walk and Night Market

The annual Borough of Glass Art Walk and Night Market will take place on Saturday, July 16 in Glassboro Town Square from 5 to 10 p.m. This is a free, family fun event and there is something for any art enthusiast or casual observer to enjoy. Special Event Screening: “Beethoven in Beijing”

Dispatched by President Nixon in 1973 to help open the bamboo curtain separating Chinese and American people, the iconic Philadelphia Orchestra now turns to its past as a cultural ambassador to strengthen its future at home. Mixing archival images and audio with present-day observational footage, and enlivened with animation, Beethoven in Beijing dramatizes how the revival of classical music in China is energizing the world of music.  more

Seventh Annual Nassau Film Festival

The Seventh Annual Nassau Film Festival will take place in person on May 21 and 22 at Princeton Garden Theatre. Attendees can also participate virtually from May 23 through June 8 at nassaufilmfestival.festivee.com.

The event will screen independent short films and music videos from filmmakers all over the world. Guests can participate in a question-and-answer panel with selected filmmakers. Proceeds go toward the Lisa Goldstein Education Foundation, a nonprofit that provides scholarship money from West Windsor-Plainsboro District students attending college. Showtimes vary and ticket prices range from $15-25.  more

Ansel Adams Photography Exhibition at Kean University

Works by iconic 20th-century landscape photographer Ansel Adams are now on display at the Galleries at Liberty Hall Academic Center at Kean University. 

The “Early Works” exhibition features 42 original vintage photographs by the master photographer of the American West, ranging from the 1920s to the 1950s. It is open to the public with a pay-what-you-wish (PWYW) admission. more

Michener Art Museum Presents “Keith Haring: A Radiant Legacy”

Now on view at the Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pa., “Keith Haring: A Radiant Legacy” is drawing visitors from around the region for this intimate and extensive collection of a beloved artist. The exhibit will run through July 31, 2022.

Born in Reading, Pa., and raised in nearby Kutztown, Pa., Haring (1958-1990) developed an early love for drawing, which eventually expanded into paintings, prints, posters, sculpture, and his famous street art. Completely unique to himself, Haring developed a style that became as recognizable as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf. Haring’s colorful graffiti, which punctuated New York City’s streetscape, helped to contribute to his meteoric rise.  more

John Wind Jewelry Trunk Show and Art Talk

Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton Township will play host to the John Wind Jewelry and Trunk Show on Saturday, April 30 from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event is free with admission to the park (no cost to GFS members). 

Local designer John Wind’s vintage inspired charms and new designs are a sight to behold. The artist will deliver a lecture at 10:30 a.m. in which he will discuss his process, how he was influenced by his mother’s tastes and fashions, and his ideas for new designs. The Trunk Show will follow the lecture, and will be located outside of the gift shop.  more

Rutgers-New Brunswick’s Zimmerli Art Museum Names New Director

Maura Reilly — a curator, writer, art consultant, and nonprofit leader who has organized dozens of exhibitions internationally that focus on marginalized artists — has been named the new director of the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University-New Brunswick.

Reilly is the founding curator of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum, where she developed and launched the first exhibition and public programming space in the United States devoted entirely to feminist art. While there, she organized several landmark exhibitions, including the permanent installation of Judy Chicago’s “The Dinner Party” and the blockbuster “Global Feminisms” (co-curated with Linda Nochlin), among others. more

Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie Presents “Painting The Moon & Beyond”

The Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie in Cadwalader Park is now presenting an exhibition of paintings by New Jersey native and revered American landscape painter Lois Dodd and artists who have long been a part of her life. Dodd, 94, a co-founder of the legendary artist-run Tanager Gallery, has, for more than 70 years, painted her surroundings including New York’s Lower East Side, rural Mid-Coast Maine, and the Delaware Water Gap. Among her favorite subjects — and the central theme of the exhibition -— is the night sky. more

Morven Museum’s Festival of Trees Opens Nov. 17

Morven Museum’s Festival of Trees will be on view Wednesdays through Sundays from November 17 to January 10, 2022, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This holiday tradition will celebrate its 16th year with a juried collection of themed trees and mantels displayed throughout the museum’s galleries, all decorated by members of garden clubs and organizations.

“Slice of Life” Quilt Art Celebrates 300 Years of Hightstown History

Ever wonder what your day-to-day life would be like if you lived 100 years ago? 200 years ago? How about 300 years ago? The Hightstown Woman’s Club thought just that same thing and created a “Slice of Life” Art Quilt to commemorate 300 years of living in Hightstown, New Jersey. On Sunday, November 14 at 2 p.m., they will be presenting this work of living history and art to the Borough officials at the historic Fire House event room, 140 North Main Street. 

At the event, the Woman’s Club CIP Committee will reveal the two-year process that brought them to the finished product. This was a community effort, with 26 makers from Hightstown and East Windsor participating. An accompanying book has been produced with a rich historic compilation of the art quilt subjects, and will be available to view and purchase in time for the holidays.  more

Monmouth Museum Holiday Train Display Returns

The Holiday Train Display at Monmouth Museum makes a much anticipated return this November 21 through December 31. Situated in the Main Gallery, the display will be accompanied by elaborately decorated Christmas trees and seasonal artwork crafted by The Arc of Monmouth participants. The Arc is a nonprofit I/DD organization that aims to improve the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The group’s holiday artwork is sure to get visitors into the Christmas spirit.  more
