Jamie Bissonette is a former vegan turned award-winning nose-to-tail chef. Needless to say, the restaurant owner of Toro NYC and Coppa and Toro of Boston, is a fascinating character full of irony, wit, and delicious recipes. Bissonnette’s whole career is based off of his desire to make seemingly disgusting or inedible things delicious.  In fact, his favorite thing to confront in the kitchen is offal and other animal parts that are usually disposed of by other cooks.   more

Ruth Reichl is sometimes asked the question: If you had a superpower, what would it be? For the author, food writer and editor — formerly the restaurant critic at The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times and the editor-in-chief of the late and lamented Gourmet magazine, the answer is a no-brainer: To have a heightened palate.

“I wish I had it, but I so do not,” she said during a telephone interview last week. “Especially in my business, it would be a great asset.” Ms. Reichl will speak this Friday at a sold-out Book Lover’s Luncheon hosted by the Princeton Public Library and the Friends of the Library, at Springdale Golf Club. “The closest I’ve ever seen is Paula Wolfert, whom I traveled with once,” she continued. “She really does have an uncanny ability to pull flavors apart.” more

For this week’s installation of the “Plate to Date” we go to New York’s Flatiron District, home of the Gramercy Tavern. Among Zagat Survey’s “Most Popular” list, this tavern with an upscale dining room has been a flagship of the New York dining scene.

Executive chef, Michael Anthony – who was awarded “Outstanding Chef” by the James Beard Foundations just this week – features farm fresh ingredients in his delectable plates. His cheese kielbasa with crispy potatoes, chicory and mustard chutney is no exception. Stop by 42 East 20th Street to indulge in this American-style restaurant’s take on a traditional Polish dish. Pair it with their “Hop To It” cocktail with Plymouth Gin, Stone Pine Liqueur, IPA, and Lemon, and you have yourself a matchless meal.

Jenna Park tells Urban Agenda NYC how she and her husband are spicing up the NYC baking scene with their innovative baking business.

Sugar and spice really does make everything nice for the inventive husband-and-wife team, Mark Sopchak and Jenna Park. Co-founders of the Brooklyn-based baking brand, Whimsy and Spice, they have made a living off of their outrageously delicious handmade treats that combine traditional flavored confections with a kick of unexpected spice. However, it’s another unusual mixture that has helped reap sweet success for Whimsy and Spice: Mark’s culinary arts background and Jenna’s work as a photographer and graphic designer. more

It's all about food, friends, and family at this quintessential New York deli.

No trip to New York is complete without a visit to Zabar’s on Broadway. Located across Central Park from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, not too far from the Museum of Natural History, it’s the perfect detour on the way home from a daytrip to the city. Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman is known to enjoy Zabar’s and the late lamented Nora Ephron was a regular. My Manhattan friends swear they couldn’t live without it. And it’s easy to see why. The Zabar family members who run the business roast their own coffees, smoke their own fish (whitefish and cod as well as salmon and sturgeon), pickle their own herring, prepare their own meats (corned beef and pastrami), cook their own dishes and salads, and bake their own bagels, breads and pastries. Besides imported and domestic cheeses and salamis, they also stock an enormous selection of honeys, oils, mustards, and lemonades of every hue and flavor—how enticing does elderflower sound? Gift baskets can be had for all occasions, made to order for the holidays, or just to enjoy on a picnic or for breakfast. more

Jennifer Esposito has fallen in love with jelly doughnuts -- twice.

Growing up in an Italian-American family in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn, actor/entrepreneur Esposito was immersed in a childhood defined by food—and her ravenous hunger for it. She ate everything in sight—bagels, cake, spaghetti, zeppolis at the Italian street fair, jam dot cookies she baked with her sister at Christmas. “Food is very tied to emotion and remembering events,” she says. more

There is a certain poetry, an unspoken connection to a deep source of quiet, in wrapping your hands around a cup of hot tea, watching the swell of silent steam swirl skyward, and inhaling the scent of steeping tea leaves—with a clean bite of citrus, a secret whisper of fragrant floral, the earthy green breath of herbs, or the arranged marriage of pungent spices.  more

You don’t have to be an avid practitioner of yoga to visit the Bedford Post Inn. But it seems a shame, somehow, to stop at this bucolic setting and not take advantage of the Yoga Loft, a light-filled former barn that overlooks a zen garden. And for those who spend a night in one of the inn’s eight rooms, a free yoga class is part of the deal.

Opened in 2007 by husband-and-wife actors Richard Gere and Carey Lowell and partner Russell Hernandez, the inn is known as much for its restaurants and related comforts as it is for its unique yoga program. Only a few years after opening, the Bedford Post Inn was named a member of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux organization of boutique hotels. more
