10 of the year’s most memorable hashtags become art in this upcoming exhibit at Caelum Gallery, NYC
For the active social media user, these hashtags require little to no explanation. That’s because they are partnered with millions of images and posts from around the world that say more than we could’ve imagined.
Some hashtags are outlandish and some are political, but they all bring a unified awareness to certain causes and events, whether we like it or not. While many of us wish we could escape Kim Kardashian’s desire to #BreakTheInternet with her nude cover for Paper Magazine, we might feel a sense of empowerment when #LoveWins in the Supreme Court.
There certainly is an art to the hashtag, and perhaps no one understands this better than the team at Bourn. A creative studio focused on crafting purpose driven experiences, Bourn decided to partner with hashtag inventor Chris Messina to curate the “Hashtags Unplugged” show. 25 artists where asked to visualize 10 of the year’s most memorable hashtags for the NYC exhibit that runs May 12-14 in the Caelum Gallery in Chelsea.
Featured artists include Black Brain (pop noir), Alexis Duque (paint), Tony Murray (sculpture), Tara Adiseshan (data science), Sid & Jim (video), Diana Arand (mixed media), Ashley Ja'nae (drawing), and Joshie Fishbein (creative tech).
The opening reception for Hashtags Unplugged will take place on Thursday, May 12, from 6–8pm alongside NYCxDESIGN week, New York City's official citywide celebration of design. Tickets can be purchased online via EventBrite at $12 for the exhibition.
