August 15 marks India Independence Day, and this stunning art book captures the country’s rich culture and creativity through fashion.

Sporting silk beaded capes, intricately patterned gowns, and dazzling dresses, the models in India Fantastique Fashion by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosia look like couture mermaids sunbathing by the sea. Indeed, the creations of famed Indian designers Jani and Khosia seem otherworldly.

Their breathtaking designs combine traditional Indian craftsmanship with modern European fashion, and are worn by celebrities around the world. In India Fantastique Fashion, fashion photographer Ram Shergill presents Jani and Khosia’s vibrant creations against the stark dessert and seascape. Here, we share some striking images from this dramatic art tomb published by Thames & Hudson.

“Vrindavan: where Krishna is. A riot of multi-hued silk-thread embroidery anoints this multi-paneled skirt. From a collection inspired by the mythological tales of Krishna playing Holi in the city of Vrindaran.”
